Bike tour in Minho Northern Portugal vineyards, rivers and Atlantic coast

Discovering famous vineyards of the Minho Valley riding a bicycle is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining things to do while visiting Portugal! As you ride through the vineyards, you will be stunned by this unusual experience that can only be lived while cycling.

Going slowly through the vineyards, we will visit family-owned wineries and explore the medieval fortresses as well as castles of Valença, Monção and Melgaço.

During this holiday, you will taste the best Alvarinho wines and the most traditional Portuguese cuisine.

Itinerary

Private transfer from Porto or Vigo (Spain) to Melgaço.

Our local representative will meet you in Melgaço to make a briefing about the tour.

Melgaço is a charming fortified town on the bank of the river Minho, in the North of Portugal, home of the famous Alvarinho wines, Vinho Verde.

If you arrive earlier you can explore Melgaço castle and walk through the narrow streets.
You can visit Solar do Alvarinho to learn more about Alvarinho wines and taste some of them.

Today you cycle through the widely popular Alvarinho wine region: Melgaço and Monção, the very heart for Alvarinho wines. During the day you will enjoy incredible landscapes, ride through traditional villages, between vineyards and you get the chance to visit some family-owned wineries.

Arriving in Monção you have time to relax and enjoy the quiet atmosphere.

Today, you will ride eastwards, along the Minho river on a cycle way built on a old railway line.

Your journey will take you through traditional villages, corn fields, and kiwi fields.
Along the way, you can explore the landmarks of the battles between Portugal and Spain, especially the impressive 13th centuruy castle in Lapela and the 17th century fort in Valença.

The route continues on the banks of the Minho Valley and you ride towards the coast, following the Portuguese Coastal Camino de Santiago and passing pilgrims on their spiritual journey.

You’ll have time to ride into the historic centre of Vila Nova de Cerveira known nationally and internationally as the Town of the Arts and into the historic centre of Caminha, along its medieval streets.

Afterwards follow our bike route through a beautiful pine forest and ride by the sea to arrive at the fisherman town of Vila Praia de Ancora.

Start the day crossing the Ancora river and ride along the paths and cycleways, from one beach to another, through forests, accompanied by a fresh breeze from the sea.

On the way you will find imposing 17th century military forts overlooking the sea built to defend the Minho region from the Spanish army.

As you get close to Viana do Castelo, windmills are reminders of the farming traditions connected with the maize.

After breakfast, ride through the heart of Lima Valley, enjoy the lush vineyards and quaint Portuguese villages.

Follow the river to Ponte de Lima, the oldest chartered town in Portugal.
Make a break in this pretty riverside town, named for the long medieval bridge over Lima river.

After a break keep riding on along the banks of the Lima river towards Ponte da Barca, a picturesque town with charming stone houses and an elegant medieval bridge and then follow the Vez cycleway by Vez river.
The calm waters of the Vez river will accompany you all the way to Arcos de Valdevez.

In this lovely town with its elegant squares and a charming historic centre, you will delight in discovering a range of regional culinary specialties including the Charutos dos Arcos dessert, one of the 7 Wonders of Portuguese Sweetstaste and the famous fresh Vinho Verde loureiro wine that is produced in the region.

After a 30 min. morning transfer we will leave you and your bikes at Lindoso village, one of the most traditional villages in Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Make a detour to Lindoso castle and be surprised by the enormous granite surface on which numerous stone maize stores are built and are still in use today to store and protect the corn cobs.

Ride on the narrow streets towards Soajo, a rustic village in a unique setting and enjoy the wonderful viewpoints on the way.

Make a break in Soajo and then go downhill all the way to reach Arcos de Valdevez.
